Next week is Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October.  Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnapping, torture, and murder of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. His efforts led to a tip that resulted in the discovery of a multi-million dollar narcotics manufacturing operation in Chihuahua, Mexico.  On Tuesday, October 23, 2018, the City will host a small Red Ribbon Week celebration at MacDorsa Park at Noon. Having a drug-free community is a priority for the City of Scotts Valley, which is why we celebrate Red Ribbon Week each year and continue to teach the 5th Grade DARE program in our local schools.

General Plan Advisory Committee Meeting - Open Space

The next  General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 22, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Council Chambers.  At this meeting, the General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) will review the Draft Open Space and Conservation Element.  Public comment is welcomed and encouraged.  The Draft Open Space & Conservation Element addresses the conservation and management of natural resources and open space areas. This includes the protection of sensitive plant and animal species, preservation and enhancement of Scotts Valley’s creeks and watersheds, and balanced management of open space areas.  It also includes measures to protect the City’s cultural and historic resources and improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  A copy of the GPAC meeting materials can be found at: http://www.scottsvalleygeneralplan.com/participate.html

PG&E at Skypark

PG&E is using the Santa Cruz parcel of the dirt lot located at Skypark as part of its wildfire vegetation management program, removing tree limbs that are near power lines.  It is anticipated that PG&E will house its heavy equipment on the dirt lot through early November.

Fiscal Legislative Tracking

Did you know that the City actively works with its sales tax consultant, HdL Companies to monitor and project Scotts Valley's sales tax revenue and track state and federal legislative bills related to sales tax, use tax, and property tax, as well as other taxation and regulatory legislation?  August 31st was the final day to pass all bills in the Legislature.  September 30th at midnight was the deadline for the Governor to sign or veto the final bills of his career.  As the longest serving governor in California history, Governor Brown has signed nearly 20,000 bills.  This year, the governor signed 1,016 bills and vetoed 16.5% (201) of the total 1,217 regular session bills that made it to his desk. You may have noticed a street sweeper in town – we are currently conducting street sweeping, in which we rotate street routes throughout the year.  As routes change, our goal is to alternate areas so that all public roads throughout the City are swept.  Below is a list of streets that are scheduled to be swept this year:
